Arriving in Santiago

So we arrived to Santiago around 4 pm. I've checked different ways to get into the city and one thing seemed certain, there was no easy one-way alternative except taxis. So we opted for the choice with bus and change to metro. We bought our tickets and got out in the heating afternoon sun. To our surprise there was a long line to the bus we just payed for and we watched the first one pass after being filled the south american way. Luckily enough we made it onto the second bus, just after every seat was taken. And no room for luggage so we kinda blocked the exist with our suitcases. Standing up on the regular fast-speed-until-red light/having-to-break-suddenly type of moving transport.

Google maps I adore you. I tracked our way using this one but it was actually an elderly man who also pointed out where to exist to change to metro. I.e. we found our way to Pajaritos. Arriving just in time for rush hours, lovely little surprise with suitcases after a full day of traveling. We got into the stuffed metro, being loved by everyone due to our belongings and exited just in time for our stop.

While getting up from the metro stop we were welcomed by a giant feast. The whole road was blocked and a lot of children walked down it dressed in all types of costumes. Thousand of people gathered around this spectacle and it was not the time to drag a suitcase through the crowd, but we got out alive even here. Huge luck we didn't have to cross the street 'cause that would have been walking for kilometres.

Instead it was around 400 m to reach our rented apartment. People had commented about the reception being hard to find but Google maps did not disappoint here either, maybe some people stayed in a different building than us. We got a key from the guy in the reception before the elevator and entered our room, a few minutes later getting a call from our host that was located on the floor below. Easy enough. Made our check in and went back to the blasting hot room. Our host told me something about hot air that I didn't understand until she arrived to check on our malfunctioning safety deposit box. There was this huge pipe that extracted hot air from the room and hence needed to be put out the french balcony. I thought this little piece of air conditioning device worked quite find but J felt like living in a sauna. Though I agreed with him night time when we didn't wanna open the window (mosquitos etc) and we couldn't have the a.c. It was hot for sure.

Anyhows after check in the time was well over 9pm and we were starving. No time/willingness to do any full restaurant research. So we stumbled into a restaurant that didn't seem too fancy (expensive). It was still quite expensive but they had an offer on chorillana that a friend recommended as a typical Chilean dish. So we shared a platter and it was Swedish pyttipanna. Or sort of ;-) Nothing extraordinary but filling and with a good taste. Accompanied to this we celebrated reaching Chile with a pisco sour. Gotta find out whether Chilean or peruan is the best one ;-) This one was not as expected and J thought I'd tricked him that this drink ever could be good. But don't worry, we had more tries the days to come...

La chorillana

Neighbourhood we lived in, Lastarria

First Pisco sour, not a success

J asked for a Chilean beer, got this 7 % one...

We were quite tired after traveling since early morning hours and went straight to bed after, excited to explore this city. Already when arriving we felt a different vibe to the city than before, it felt more safe.

Adiós,
S
