Base of the Torres camp

What to do on our first day in Torres by ourselves? We've read about the classic base of the Torres hike and after a while decided we'd do as everyone else and try out this one. Our hostel guy called it an easy hike. Organised tours wrote that you had to be in good shape to make it. Us? Well we definitely would say that it's strenuous and quite the ascent x many so not an easy hike. But if you'd rest more than we did it would probably be less strenuous.

We got up at 5 with the impression we could leave at 6 am. Well we left 6:15 so not too bad. Began our hike just after 9 am. And even though it's a long ride to get to the park this one is a fairly easy drive, just a few km on gravel. And the scenery keeps you company. This one goes through the Amarga entrance.

We started of with an easy flat hike but soon the ascent began. I walked in very warm clothes and it was a blasting sun so it was quite hard. After getting off some layers it got better. Very many flies during the ascent so one wouldn't wanna walk in clothes that didn't cover the skin.

Starting the hike

At the top we began to descent (!). Something we found unnecessary since we were to reach the base of the Torres that were higher up. The trail sometimes even reached the river down below and we walked up and down before reaching chileno camp. One of the camp sites for the w-trekk. I.e. this trail is part of the W, although you sleep in the chileno camp and then make your way to the base of the torres before continuing to the next camp site.

We had a quick sandwich at the chileno camp since it was light rain in the air. After this it was some more km in the valley before starting the real ascent to the towers. The rain quickly disappeared and for the rest of the trip we had mostly sun, especially when returning later in the afternoon - totally blue sky.

It was strenuous with another ascent but well worth the hike. You can't see the water below the towers before getting almost to the end of the trail. The towers are majestic and one of a kind. Well some of a kind, this kind of granite blocks only exists in a few part of the world. Dolomites are one. Geology at its best.

We enjoyed the view here for some time and then when more and more people arrived we decided to head back. The whole trail is 18 km with a ascent of 750 m.

Sunny weather!

Almost at the start of the trail again. The towers look quite far away huh?

We tried another restaurant for dinner this evening, hungry and in a hurry doesn't make good decisions though. We ended up in a fast food restaurant with one of the worst burgers I had. We had thought more than once about making our own dinner but the grocery shops wasn't that cheap and we always arrived so late. And we saw another couple making something that looked super good but in the morning we heard someone puke x many and we suspected it to be one one of the cookers. Let's not jinx something here but we felt more than okay so far during this trip despite foreign food. In Peru one felt slightly nauseous all the time so this is very good so far.
